Volunteer Complementary Therapists Needed

MND Scotland are about to undertake a home based complementary therapy pilot for people affected by Motor Neurone Disease, including patients and their carers.  We need qualified therapists with their own insurance in either aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, reiki, indian head massage, reflexology or on site massage to carry out a course of treatment in the client’s own home.  The pilot will initially be happening in Glasgow, North / South Lanarkshire and the Central Region. Volunteer Task Outline

Volunteer Role:         Complementary Therapist     

Purpose of Role:  MND Scotland provides care, support and information to people affected by Motor Neurone Disease.  As part of this remit a new pilot project has been created to provide complementary therapies to both patients and carers in their own homes.   The treatments provided to the clients may improve emotional wellbeing and assist with pain management or be used as part of a palliative care service.

Responsible to:         Therapies Co-ordinator                      

Supported by:           Volunteer Development Officer / Care Team Adviser

Main Tasks:   To provide complementary therapy treatments to clients in their own homes for up to a 6 session block.  To record details of treatments given and maintain confidentiality at all times.  To contact the relevant staff member / health care provider if there are concerns about the client’s wellbeing and attend training courses as required.

Skills or Experience:  Therapists must be qualified and insured for at least            £1 million in the discipline they wish to practice.  The therapist must be qualified in one or more of the following therapies: aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, reiki, on site massage, reflexology and indian head massage.  Applicants must be good listeners / communicators and should be reliable.

Therapists should provide their own equipment, if required.  Tee shirts or polo shirts will be supplied, along with towels depending upon the treatment offered.

Training will be provided in the various aspects of MND, palliative care, infection control and manual handling, etc. 

Time Commitment:  A minimum of a 6 session block with the same client .

Volunteer Expenses: Travel expenses at 40p per mile or public transport costs (not taxi fares) or any massage medium / paper towel roll costs incurred by therapist.  Monies will be reimbursed on a monthly basis by cheque.
